When Superman wore his walking boots

We went for an end-of-holidays walk on Sunday afternoon, out by the sea, well, the Bristol Channel really, to make the most of the beautiful weather.   This is the aptly (if unoriginally) named Sand Bay.

The littlest boy went as Superman, as he so often does, and he also wanted to wear his walking boots.  No reason not to, right?  He toyed with the idea of wearing a crash helmet as well, but decided that might be something to leave for another day.

The rich farmland pushes right up to the coast here, and the grass was full of wild flowers and cows.  They all marched past us except the one with horns, which stopped and stared and then started walking at us.  I sensed a bit of attitude developing there.

Off adventuring.

We dropped down on to the pebbly beach and did some scrambling about on rocks, which is one of their favourite things to do.  Some of the pebbles were pretty big, so I mostly concentrating on not twisting my ankle.

Look at those lovely colours, all greys and the dustiest of blues.  I'd like to do one of those clever things where you put boxes of colour next to the photo.  Annie at Knitsofacto explained it all beautifully here.  I've made a note of her page, and I'm going to have a go when I get a minute.  I love seeing the colours extracted and set out alongside.  Nature does it all so tastefully sometimes.

The winds blow strongly here, in from the sea, and the trees lean away from the salt and the spray and the gales.

Back in the car park we found a rope swing which made us all very happy.  It makes me think we should carry a rope with us at all times, they'd happily play here for ages.  There was an added frisson of danger for those wearing shorts, as the person pushing could direct them towards the stinging nettles.

Yesterday it was back to earth with a bump.  Other half's computer needed reparing on Friday, yesterday the car sprung a problem.  Sigh.  These things don't come in threes do they?  If they do, then the bathroom leak that's making the landing carpet damp is the third thing.  It does count doesn't it?

  1. I loved this post CJ. The views are gorgeous and it must be wonderful to live so close to the sea. Your boys look like they had a great time and that rope swing was perfect for Superman to go flying through the air....though I would have been holding my breath....looks really high in your photo.
Seems there's always some unexpected expense doesn't it.

  4. Back to earth with a bump for us - and it's raining now! Love super mans outfit with the walking boots, and I think a crash helmet would have been fine too. Looks like it was a great way to end the half term holiday. x

  6. I think the idea of carrying a rope for an impromptu rope swing is excellent. I wonder if I can fit one in my handbag, too. I am glad your half term holiday was fun. Keeping my fingers crossed for you so that there are no more bumps along the way this week. x

  8. I love the idea of Superman going out for a walk - sensibly in his walking boots! - to check on everything and make sure that all is well in the world before going back to school again! Looks as though you had a great time, so lovely to see the sights with you. xx

  12. I just can't get over that Superman outfit, hilarious. I have a feeling Lyla will get that way once she has a princess costume or something haha. Those photos are beautiful! I really hope things start improving with your car/computer/bathroom. Hopefully it does just come in threes and now it's done. Good luck!

  13. Oh dear, I don't like the sound of your return to earth. I'm glad you had a nice walk together. I love the Superman get-up, that's really hilarious. He is so much like my daughter, I know they'd get along famously. Her outfits kill me sometimes. This looks like a beautiful place, I hope you'll be able to go back again and again.

  17. Gorgeous photos CJ, and your determined superhero made me smile; I think that Superman would definitely have benefitted from walking boots if only he'd thought of it; inspired ;-) Hope you're having a good week and that the afterglow of last week remains x

  20. What a wonderful post, CJ. One of my favourite places to go is Priests Cove and I stack pebbles too. I sit and admire their colour and beauty as well. And frankly superman in a pair of walking boots would have a devoted servant in Olly!

  21. I just loved adventuring with you! The boys look like they're having a blast. It's great that you get them out for a run often. Very healthy for them. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  22. I love how he wears his Superman outfit out adventuring! Ah, the joys of childhood. Looks like a wonderful time exploring and enjoying the beautiful countryside. I'm sorry to hear about the computer and car repair needs and hope that the leak isn't too bad. Real life has a way of getting in the way of things, doesn't it? I'd rather just spend all my time adventuring:) Hope you're having a lovely week, CJ!

  23. Hopefully you have better luck - in our house, they DO come in threes, though the three things normally involve three of the animals needing to go to the veterinarian all in the same week. Looks like a wonderful family outing. Love that you allow your children to express themselves and how wonderful that your son wants to save the world. :)

  25. A rope swing - one of those things you never grow out of! I love them. I also like that tree bent sideways - it must have seen some weather in it's time!
Sorry to hear about your run of bad luck. Hopefully it'll be followed by unexpected good things...

  27. Fantastic photos, as ever. And I agree wholeheartedly with the comment above - the pile of sea washed stones is lovely. Hope your luck has turned now and there have been no more disasters.

  28. Beautiful pictures! Our neighbours son was dressed as a dinosaur the other day and when I told him he had a lovely costume he told me off for not knowing it was Godzilla! lol

  29. I think everyday life is pretty good when it's interspersed with days like these, they're what keep us going. I'm always fascinated by trees which lean because of the way the wind blows, nature's sculpture.

  30. Fantastic photos you live in such a beautiful part of the country! I'm not wishing my life away but I'm looking forward to not going everywhere with a buggy so we can get 'off road' a bit more!!

  32. Lovely photos and looks like a great day was had by all. The title did make me laugh, I remember when my two were permanently dressing as super heros....they are growing up so fast we've just donated all their costumes to their old pre-school, I know it's what happens (growing up) but it seems to happen so quickly, they'll be teenagers before I know it!

  33. What a gorgeous spot and your photos are wonderful. I love the shot of the pile of pebbles. I think I have the only children in the world who dislike dressing up, however that doesn't mean they dress appropriately - Bella insisted on wearing her smart, be-jeweled "wedding" shoes to the park this morning. x
