Does my dog look good in this?

Autumn is here, so I have new knitting on the go. I've thrown caution to the winds and bought some actual wool. It's soft as a cloud, so we will see whether I'm okay wearing it. I'm usually not, but I think I might be lucky this time. I bought it online and when it turned up it look more sort of mauve that I imagined. It's called Madre Perla, which sounds far better than mauve, but I'm wondering if I should have gone for something with a bit more oomph such as Amoroso which is a riskier deep red. I have been reading about Decision Fatigue and debating whether I did my online shopping at the wrong end of the day. Apparently Barack Obama wore a 'uniform' every day, so he didn't have to waste any of his decisions on clothing. I think I shall implement the same thing here. There are so many miniscule decisions to make every single day, I get quite grumpy by the end of it. Or maybe I'm just innately grumpy. Yes, that's probably it.

Anyway, knitting, on the go. A scarf, of course, as that is all I can manage late at night when I have my knitting window. That or a blanket. It's sat on one of my new napkins, which I bought to replace the ones that Bertie has chewed. An ebay find, and I like them so much that I've decided not to use them in case he chews them as well. I am doing the same thing with my new tea towels, which are safely tucked away in a drawer.

I also have new cushions. I know it sounds as though I have been on a mad spending spree, but the dog has done his worst and everything has gone all tatty. The cushions lived on top of the piano for a few days, out of reach, but I finally plucked up the courage to put them on the sofa. The littlest boy said to me yesterday, 'The new cushions really suit Bert.' I have decided that henceforth that is how I shall make all of my soft furnishing decisions. No looking at complex questions such as examination of eco-credentials or washability or where things were made, I shall simply ask, 'Will the dog look good on this?'

  3. I really do love the colour of your new wool, I hope you're able to wear it. Just think of all the decision fatigue you will save yourself on soft furnishing choices in the future when you only have to think about Bertie. xx Susan

  4. A perfectly reasonable way to make decisions I feel. The colour for your new scarf is perfect. I do understand though. Life is so many decisions that on occasion you just want to scream. Bertie is an excellent yardstick :). B x

  6. Hi CJ
Decisions, decisions, decisions... I'm no good at it and still I'm forced to making multiple of them a day. Uniform outfits for each day sounds actually great. I could easily do jeans and t-shirt 7 days a week. Accompanied by a cardigan or fleece jacket depending on the weather. That is what I will do. One decision out of the way at least. Your yarn look yum yum. Wool is a tricky one isn't it? Most of the time it does itch, maybe you're lucky with this one. Cross fingers.

  7. I think that is as good a way of making a decision as any other... and I think madre perla is a beautiful colour!

  8. Bertie looks cosy if also a little guilty. I can't wear wool against my skin as if I do I itch constantly. Bertie should get out of the chewing things habit and them you'll be able to use your napkins.

  9. Ok so I'm having huge problems commenting on blogger as of yesterday so I hope this works! I can't tell Bert apart from the cushions :o) Enjoy the knitting and I hope it is suitable for close to skin action x

  11. The end of this post really made me laugh! I love your wool, by the way, and the stitch definition in that scarf is lovely. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

  12. Oh my goodness, I do like the way you write! It's been a while since I've checked in so I got to read three posts today. We have a young Scotty dog, all of your puppy comments are very familiar. If your scarf doesn't itch, would you please post the brand or more particulars? Maybe I can find it with the color names? Looking forward to your next post!

  13. The shots of Bertie are so funny...makes one wonder where to pet, to land on a dog! It's very practical to match things to him, and he seems to like these very much. He says "Well done, mum!" The wool is pretty, I like the more subdued tones and this is a great color.

  14. That's so funny, I was just waxing nostalgic with my husband about my college "uniform" and how I've somewhat returned to it. My roommate when we were first dating used to joke that I was a jeans, white (men's under) t-shirt girl w/a cardigan girl. And yes, pretty much everyday I wore that to class. I did have different colored cardigans, gray, navy, black, I had a green one I lost in the underground tunnel LOL -- though I wore black the most.

Today I'm wearing a gray t-shirt, black sweatshirt and jeans. I'm tidy, but it's a variation of the uniform.

I love the word tatty. I would say I'm in a perpetual state of tatty, but I think it's ok. I make effort I am who I am. My couch is tatty, but we are not messing with new ideas for that until the college years.

Good luck with the knitting. I think it looks beautiful. However most importantly, enjoy the knit!!

  15. I have six dogs, God help me, and no matter what colour they were when I first got them, (blonde, dark brown, almost black), within months they had all morphed into ... ginger. As they seem to cast their coats all year round, this means that all household furnishings, tights-wearing legs, my entire body, are also this particular hue. And ginger is a difficult colour to pull off, I find, when you're also quite round, short, and often red in the face, to boot. For years I have lusted after crushed velvet sofas of the Laura Ashley persuasion, pale carpets, and the ability to store things on the lower shelves of delicate wooden furniture, to no avail. Wipeable/washable/long-suffering/durable, these are the only style attributes I take notice of now when making a purchase. My cushions are regularly retrieved from dog beds, (having been dragged there by their occupants), under the kitchen table (which is a favourite place for the devouring of gummy, sticky treats), and once from under the blackcurrant bushes at the bottom of the garden, (they never made it back into the living room). I think your sofa and its accessories look pretty damn immaculate by comparison, and I applaud you. Love the wool too. Am similarly comforted by the idea of other people in permanent jeans, t shirts and trainers, as this is also how I live. Court shoes, dresses, and matching jewellery, with a spritz of a beautiful, heady perfume, belong in a different world to the one I inhabit, I'm afraid. Or does a quick blast of air freshener count ?

  16. I've given up on cushions altogether, I got so fed up with the dog destroying them. Your wool looks gorgeous, I do love the colour.

  17. I love the autumnal colour of your wool. And Bertie and the cushions are a very good match!

  18. First off I highly doubt you are innately grumpy, now me, well that is another story. I not near as cheerful as I portray myself, well that is if I am even portraying myself cheerfully. My dogs have now eaten 3 of 4 of my cushions, why I ask? What could possible taste good with cushions?

  19. And your plants as well obviously! If more people styled their house and gardens around their pets it would be a much more fun place....
