Common

hullo?

A picnic in the park, where some sort of sheep-related event was taking place. The Jacob had the most fantastic horns, really good to see. Then a walk up on the common in the gathering gloom. It was cool and breezy, not good butterfly weather. It's normally a great place to see them, but I think they were hunkering down. Is anyone doing The Big Butterfly Count? I think we might give it a whirl. The allotment would probably be a good place to count them, there are usually quite a few flitting about down there.

I hear a heatwave is coming next week. I'm trying to remember if we have a functioning paddling pool and wondering if there's room for ice-cream in the freezer.

Thank you for all of your book suggestions, I've made a list and I shall work my way through. By chance a couple were already on my bookshelf, James Rebanks' "The Shepherd's Life" and Helen Dunmore's "Zennor in Darkness", so I'm starting with them. In fact I think I shall go and sink into one right now. Wishing you a good Sunday. CJ xx

  1. Those are some cute sheepies! Amazing horns on the one. We did car stuff today, got it serviced, new tires and then went through a car wash. Oh yes, we live a wild and crazy life. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  2. Love the photos of the sheep with the funny 'fleece do'! We seem to be a little lacking in butterflies this year; I hope you spot lots at your allotment. xx

  3. I'm not holding my breath waiting for the heatwave, it's freezing here at the moment.... but then probably just as well as we don't have a paddling pool..... (and there's always room for icecream - just throw away some unlabelled leftovers - what you dont have those in your freezer? just me........)

  4. Love their curly fleece. I've just been given The Shepherd's Life so good to see it recommended elsewhere. I've decided to wash all the sofa covers given the promise of some good drying weather but it 's looking pretty grey out this morning!

  9. I can empathise with that sheep as my fringe needs cutting too! As for the butterfly count, the buddleias are coming into flower so I may take part. The problem is so often there are so many fluttering amongst the flowers that they are impossible to count.

  11. The Big Butterfly Count sounds wonderful! I hope you find them all. A heat wave sounds like just the thing for you guys over there. Our recent one is finally, blessedly relenting over the course of the coming week, with legitimate potential for rain. I think we're swapping climates. :)

  12. CJ, if there's not room in your freezer for ice cream then you need to dispense with some bags of frozen veg and rectify this situation immediately!

But beautiful, hazy, atmospheric photos, thank you for those.

(John made the mint choc chip ice cream from the waitrose magazine today. Bloody hell, what a faff. He's talked of nothing else all day. It better taste nice.) xx

  13. As always great photos. I agree with Gillian, use some veg to make room for the icecream. I am hoping for a heatwave but seeing is believing...

  14. Ah yes, the heatwave. I am waiting for it, too. Our paddling pool has been destroyed by some garage mice but the hose will do. When the heatwave arrives. xx

  15. you live in a completely beautiful part of the world! I was reading a recent edition of the UK country living magazine, and you pictures look just like the bucolic worlds conjured in that! I love that you've found beauty and joy in the common wildflowers.
good luck with the heatwave !

  16. Some nice photos. I'll have to look and find when the Butterfly count is since my Butterfly bush is about to flower. It appears to have been a good year for Skippers and just this morning the Whites are all appearing, the odd one each day before now but today I have maybe dozens....and they have found the Broccoli and Sprouts etc.

  19. Gorgeous photos. Hope you're enjoying the heatwave – in the shade of a tree with one of those books? We have a slight offshore breeze but it's still ridiculously hot. I dread to think what it's like in the cities. Sam x

  22. Well, the heatwave came and......no, mouth shut, not gonna say anything. Came over all Far From The Madding Crowd looking at the last large picture. Sadly, haven't spotted one butterfly here so far this summer. Hope you've had a visit (or two) from Ben and Jerry!
