Blogtober 3rd: rain

I thought I might join Lucy in a bit of Blogtober blogging this month in the hope that it gets me taking more photos. I remember when I used to take a photo a day. Now I seem to go for ages without picking up my camera.

The sunny pictures above belie the true state of affairs here. The last of the home grown grapes have just been eaten and the pink flowers are slightly bedraggled now. The dahlias were rescued from the garden before the weather changed. Last weekend I was wearing shorts and sitting in the sun watching football, this week it was all torrential showers and thick coats.

The littlest boy's team have moved to a different pitch and I was able to watch his match from the car when it starting tipping down, which was utter bliss.

Imagine me there all warm and cosy with a flask of coffee watching the rain and pretending I can actually see the goals. The house has now reverted to its usual winter state of damp football boots sitting about the place. Shouldn't be surprised if you find me lighting a scented candle or two soon.

I am gearing myself up for a big year this year. The eldest will turn 18 soon and is applying for uni and doing A-levels and learning to drive and going away on his own, while the middle boy has GCSEs. If the eldest gets a uni place, then in a year he will be gone. I am very much of the opinion that it is never too early to start getting in a state about this stuff. He made a 'joking' remark about not ever coming home again and spending his holidays at uni as well. But who will do his washing? He's made a lot of jokes about beer and turning 18 too, which I am also ignoring. I always find the children move onto the next thing before I am quite ready for it.

I am already planning to text him endless photos of the dog sitting in the window looking bereft. That will get him back if nothing else does. And yes, I will stoop as low as I have to.

  1. Dog pictures will definitely work…in my case it was cats. Three sons left the island for uni, three sons returned. Hope the same for you. Bet it was lovely and cosy in the car watching in the rain :). I may well join the blogtober party even if I’m late. Looking forward to seeing all your photos. B x

  2. Hello!I rarely pick up my camera. I seem to always rely on my phone! I remember when my Rhett was playing soccer. It was either so sunny and hot or raining and I sat in the car, pretending I could see! So nice to visit with you here. Have a cozy evening!

  3. Taking photos becomes a bit of a chore sometimes and having an incentive such as Blogtober might be useful. Getting yourself in a state early is a clever plan, you may find then that the actual leaving will feel a bit underwhelming. It is difficult, I found a hair of my daughter yesterday when hoovering and realised just how much I missed her. Have a good week xx

  4. It's no Joke, Daniel went off to uni and never came home again. Okay, a bit of an exaggeration, I should say he never lived at home again. He actually met his girlfriend almost as soon as he started uni and as she's American, she only went home a couple of times during the three years so he'd spend many of his holidays with her rather than coming home, and they set up home together when they left uni. It's a good job I didn't know what was ahead when I waved him off on that first day of term, I'd have been in more of a state than I was! It's an exciting year ahead for you all, looking round universities, seeing what's on offer and making choices.

  5. Oh my. I wept buckets after we took my eldest to uni in the back of beyond- Aberystwyth! He did come back, especially when he got glandular fever, made a swift recovery once home. Enjoy this phase of his life as he comes of age.

  6. I always think something is missing if I don't have my camera with me. We had rain at last too.

  7. Combined Alevel/GCSE years are not fun at all. And I'm sure you have but please make sure he can do all the basics for independent living from how to cook to budgeting, cleaning, basic repairs etc. One son was at Durham and made friends with rich people who had always had staff to do the cleaning etc and he had to teach everyone else in the house.

  9. Just back off holiday and catching up with missed blogs. I'm glad that you mentioned the cold - I thought that I'd just turned nesh (showing my Northern roots there!) after a week in warmer Cornwall. Lovely photos and your year ahead does seem rather stressful. I fretted about mine going off to uni since they were about 5 years old; counting down the years! You do adjust though and I'm sure that photos of a bereft Bertie will do the trick! xx
