Festive exhaustion

The dog is lying on the sofa on his back with a cushion over his head. He has found Christmas frankly exhausting. All the excitement that has to be kept up with. Endless walks with numerous people to be constantly shepherded up. Frequent outbursts of merriment, games of chase, comings and goings, high octane exuberance all the live long day. Sausages everywhere, all the time.

No sooner does he lie down than someone leaps up and does something that need supervising.

Everyone else is hanging on in there, enjoying their Christmas presents and the freedom of days with no school. The urchins had a begleri each in their stockings which they've loved. It's two big wooden beads, one at each end of a short string, and you do fiddly little tricks with them. Non-plastic, not from China, small and (in the general scheme of things) fairly environmentally friendly, being basically wood and string. Win, win, win, win. I like it when a modest thing is popular. Although on occasion they do shoot across the room at top speed taking out anything in their path. But you can't have everything, and they are marginally less destructive than a yo-yo at high speed. Ask me how I know.

I've got a couple of little outings planned with the younger two over the next few days along with a bit of hanging out at home. How is the festive season sitting with you? Got through the mince pies yet? Gifts giving you gyp? Cushion over your head? Do tell.

  1. Such lovely photos, CJ!
Christmas was quiet and cozy here in Pennsylvania.
We had some light flurries on Christmas Eve as we drove to mass, and woke to a cold and cloudy Christmas Day.
These last few days have been a mix of organizing and assembling new toys, finding yet another way to serve ham, and napping on the couch.
I will leave the house tomorrow to Christmas with my sister, and return home to hibernate yet again!
I hope you have a cozy break, my friend!

  2. We have managed it through to the other side and that is good for us as we have a bad record when it comes to Christmas

  3. My son spent 4 hours on Christmas day hiding under a pillow. He slept through lunch and refused to eat dessert so I can understand how Bertie feels. It was a lovely day otherwise. There's lots of hanging about with a few little outings here too. Enjoy! xx Susan

  4. We are roasting here in country Victoria (Australia), but we can't complain as it is properly hot across the middle of the country with temperatures above 45 degrees C. We keep the Christmas cake in the fridge and are making and drinking massive amounts of iced coffee. So all good and buzzy here.
The idea of a wintery Christmas looks so lovely and we are dreaming of a northern hemisphere Christmas one day.

Love your blog, it makes me snort with laughter.

  8. All good here, CJ. Running a few miles definitely helped with the Christmas food! I’m off to google the beads and string... xx

  9. I can imagine the excitement of your household. The magic of Christmas indeed. I do love your neighbourhood properties. Wouldn’t mind living in one of those at all. Hope Bertie can keep up the pace of watchdog. B x

  10. Dear CJ, please tell Bertie that I understand the pillow thing, although mine were hospital pillows and I didn't cover my head, but laid on top of them so I could talk to anyone who entered my room as I needed the company of humans, even the blood collector who turned up without fail every morning to do more blood tests. Christmas fare? What's that in a hospital ward? Somebody remembered to decorate the place, but they forgot all of the other Christmas traditions......... Oh well there's always next year...... regards, Robyn

  11. I'm siding with Bertie and the pillow-over-head aesthetic. Christmas is so lovely but I'm always so glad when it's over. It's just so much happening all at once. I'm feeding all of the leftover goodies (cake and biscuits) to the hens....and I just couldn't face another mince pie. xoxo

  12. Poor Bertie. Ziggy was rather overwhelmed by it all and very relieved when the house was empty of guests and he could loll about on the sofa in peace. As was I, if I'm brutally honest. I love my family dearly but it's nice when they go.

  13. All good here, no major incidents with weaponised toys yet (only a matter of time). Glad you had a merry time with your family. If Bertie is anything like Jack, he is blessed with a short memory and before you know, he'll be emerging from under the cushions for a few bouncy walks and another plate full of sausages. Happy New Year to you and yours. xx
