A taste for electrician

The dog thanks you for all of your well wishes and would like you to know that he is on the mend. However, he is now low fat all the way, which he has found disappointing. He sits near the table looking sad, squeaking slightly and licking the air in case a stray cream molecule has wafted his way.

He is still rather reluctant to walk in the mornings. I am wondering if he is maybe just not a morning person. On occasion, he plants himself and refuses to move. His dear little paws would slide along the concrete before he would take a step, I am sure. Or maybe it is just a protest over the whole low fat thing. If only we could have a conversation. I think he still isn't quite himself, so I am letting him get away with no morning walk, or just a short one, when he wants.

We had a power cut the other day. Of course it was at beer o'clock on a Friday evening and there wasn't an electrician to be found. One of them talked me through some things, so that we had half a house of power. He came out the next morning and spent an inordinate amount of time testing things, without really identifying the problem.

I was out, and other people were left in charge. At one point, the electrician opened the living room door and marched in unannounced, at which point the dog panicked and nipped him. Oh my. The dog is a fairly nervous beast and doesn't like to be surprised on home turf. Fortunately the electrician was a dog person and very understanding and didn't seem to mind at all. I am just hoping that the dog hasn't got a taste for electrician though.

The eldest boy is considering universities. He wondered whether cacao powder would be available at the one he is thinking of. I explained gently that cacao powder would not be within his budget. Honestly, it's barely within mine.

The youngest was told to look at a careers website (he will be choosing his GCSEs soon). He picked out tree surgeon (loves climbing trees), hat designer (he is very big on accessories), graffiti artist (art and parkour combined, also with the possible thrill of running across rooftops away from the police) and astronaut.

I seem to remember wanting to be a stunt woman or a shepherdess. Any careers at your end that you thought you might have a bash at?

  1. Not really, but my son at age four or five announced that he wanted to be a garbage truck driver. Kind of makes a mother proud, huh?

  2. Cacao powder ? Oh my. Sometimes I'm made very aware that I've led a very sheltered life, and have no concept at all of what it takes to live in these modern times. I googled it for my own satisfaction, and read that it is, no doubt amongst other things, a Peruvian Mood Boosting Superfood. Sounds right up my alley. Can it be deep fried in batter ?

And then, like you, I set to wondering whether my already rather delicate finances could take yet another hit, and decided, well, maybe not. But don't worry, help is at hand, and was found hidden away in my tea towel drawer! May I humbly suggest that a Caramel Freddo does much the same thing, for quite a bit less, and you don't need a llama to get you there ?

And as for careers, right now a bed tester for Slumberland would be pretty high on the list. Ah well. A girl can dream. x

  3. Hi CJ, oh your dog sounds juat like ours, hates walking, and is very territorial (but is very loving and cuddly with us). I also have one child choosing GCSE options, can I ask which careers site you used as I haven't a clue!
I've just restarted my blog at emeraldcottage.blogspot.co.uk , would be lovely to see you over there :)

  4. Lovely post, which had me laughing, and good pictures. Good to read that Bertie is okay.
I never did want to do anything specific career wise so tended to drift through my working life. Late on when I was semi-retired, and only working part-time, I did enjoy working in a book shop and a traditional hardware shop. xx

  5. Poor Bertie - maybe he's depressed. Ruby's hankering afte her long walks it's us that aren't always up for it.

Ruby doesn't like unexpected intruders either but rather than nip she runs usptairs.

  6. At 14 I went through a Careers Book crossing out any I didn't fancy. I was left with Cheesemaker, Bee Keeper and Window Dresser. Never have done any of them - or a proper job! At 69 I have only just stopped wondering what I am going to be when I grow up.

  7. Glad that Bertie is on the mend. He reminds me of my neighbours dog who literally has to be dragged along. It’s only on the homeward stretch that he starts to run as he can sniff home. Hope your electrical problems are now all fixed and no more dangerous encounters with the electrician . All sorts of job possibilities with my crew in the past, mostly of the sky diving dare devil variety. They are all very mundane these days. Have a good week. B x

  8. Poor Bertie and his low fat diet! I'm very glad that he is on the mend though, and if a stranger burst into my living room unannounced, I'd probably give them a nip too!
Nothing exciting career-wise at this end. I remember doing one of those career suitability tests many years ago at school. It suggested archive work which I scoffed at at the time, although it seems quite a nice option to me now.
The cacao powder made me laugh. My youngest started off to uni a bit of a germophobe with luxury tastes in the food department. 3 years later she would eat anything, provided it didn't move or actively fizz! :O) xx

  9. That is great news about Bertie, so pleased he is much better! I'm with him on the low-fat diet though. What miseries!
Cacao powder? Lordy, the things our children think are essential. Did you point him to a tin of Bournville Cocoa?
Back when I was small, all those years ago, I wanted to be a writer or a farmer's wife (the latter mainly for the big kitchen and bottle feeding lambs). Or a horse rider. Not a professional showjumper or jockey, just someone who got to ride around all day on horses and be paid for it. Much like 'influencers' nowadays swanning around on paid-for holidays. I was clearly ahead of my time. Txx

  10. I am happy to see Bertie is recovering, physically and mentally. Low fat food, what a disgrace Jack says. He is also on a low fat diet but supplements it with all sort of unmentionable stuff outdoors. Choosing universities - a difficult one. Cacao is available in most supermarkets here in case he is considering a Scottish university. Such things are important special treats. Though student budgets are very tight! Have a lovely week xx

  11. Please share my sympathy with Bertie. If I asked a physician, I might be put on a similar diet, which is why I am not asking. When I was 7, I decided I would wash windows at a fueling station. It would be solid work, secure. I imagined I would need a small step stool, and having that settled, I felt everything was well thought through.

  12. I'm so glad Bertie has perked up. And I applaud your youngest for his imaginative choice of potential career. Some great ideas there - hat designer might be my choice, if only because it sounds less dangerous than the others!

  13. Did the electrician have some fat on him maybe. He might have looked like a tasty treat! Fashion designer this end for me.... not too far away. Jo xxx

  14. I wanted to be an air stewardess, when I was very young, but I've never been the right size! Then I wanted to work with forest conservation, in my teens, but started work at 16 in a bank. Later, I did work for a conservation charity, but in retail! Ho hum, well almost got what I wanted.
Dd2 wanted to be a long distance lorry driver when she was young, after watching Long Distance Clara on Pigeon Street. She had a job which gave her the opportunity to drive various types of vehicles but now works in finance.
Poor Bertie, he has my sympathy with the low fat diet. Tell him I have to join him, after my talk with a doctor today.

  15. Love everyone's career dreams. I wanted to be a bed tester, one who decided when a bed was ready to be made every morning. Then I wanted to be a Personnel Manager. Needless to say I was neither.

  16. Glad to hear that Bertie is on the mend. Archie's never been a dog who gets excited when his lead comes out, he'd be happy to sit indoors all day, though he's happy enough once he's out there. I always wanted to be a teacher when I was young but I never followed it up. It's exciting looking at universities, I never went myself but I was astounded at all the opportunities available when we went to the open days with Daniel and Eleanor.

  17. Happy to hear Bertie is getting better.

I wanted to be a nurse in the Army - I became neither.
