Monday blues

Urgh, what a Monday. One of those days when it all goes wrong. Oh, nothing monumental, and I feel like a spoilt diva complaining, but I woke up in a grump and now a whole day of unproductiveness has gone by and I'm in even more of a grump.

Spent the morning wrestling with an email problem and got absolutely nowhere. You know that point when you want to throw the laptop through the plate glass window.

The dog was annoying ALL DAY. Running round the garden dragging the clean washing through the mud. Getting his paws wet, then coating them in earth and running through the kitchen TWICE, once straight after I'd cleaned up from the first time. The morning dog walk did not go well. He doesn't like to Walk Nicely, he would rather do that demented spaniel thing of running about getting under my feet, sniffing everything and trying to eat all the litter.

I gave up on the writing and put up a towel rail instead. Turns out it's not quite straight. This sort of thing matters more than it should to me I'm afraid. I opened a new phone, but it has to be sent back. I taped up a box of papers for the courier with the lable inside. I stood in something nasty (both shoes) while chasing the dog round the garden. The washing got soaked in a sudden shower. Oh I could go on but I won't. It sounds ridiculous now I've written it down and I feel like I'm standing here stamping my foot. I am pulling myself together immediately and tomorrow I shall be a completely different, lovely, patient and good-natured person.

Any tips for unslumping oneself?

Photos from a great afternoon up on the common running about the place with the dog and playing happy imaginative games.

  1. With us it's been more like a terrible month and Monday today carried on the theme.

  2. I spent the last 2 days dealing with customer service with 3 different companies and the only thing that would make me feel better would be if I could crawl through the phone and strangle someone. It was about a new phone too.
Can't imagine what I'd feel like if I'd had the rest of the problems you had.
Time for a nice strong drink.

  3. have a cup of tea, don't do anything else, have a nice evening and start again tomorrow. put the dog in a dog crate for a time out, trained my puppy that is his home particularly when he has done something he shouldn't have been doing, that would really make me mad about the laundry and floor I am sorry to say, so I feel for you. do something you just like to do. Take care from Iowa, USA

  4. Why are you apologizing? It is your God-given right to be a grump, especially on a Monday! (So say I, and that, plus $5 most places, will buy you a cup of coffee.....as we say in my family.) Hope the rest of the week turns out better, but I have my doubts about the phone. Just saying.

  5. Bet they were such cute footprints though...eh?! And the washing...well it was flapping so enticingly that of course a puppy would want to play with it. The box...well cup of tea time...the phone...ok ok grump it is then! x

  6. How to Un-Slump in one easy lesson -- think of the people whose homes were demolished in the Hurricane that leveled entire islands in the Caribbean. That should make you see the bright side of Bertie's muddy paws. :-) ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  7. Terrible. Terrible day. I can see your frustration and pain. Do not look at the brighter side. Wallow in your woes and hope for a better day tomorrow. A month from now you might now even rememeber this.

    Hugs from someone who KNOWS!

  8. I can cheer you up: I took my youngest back to uni in Bristol, drove all the way home and then realised that I'd left my bag in her room - purse, camera, the lot (my car keys were in my pocket as we were back and to unloading). I'll have a very frugal few days before I can face the return journey to collect it. Bad words may have been uttered! Hope tomorrow is better for you. xx

  9. Oh, CJ. It sounds like a perfectly horrid day - frustrating and infuriating. I hope that today is much calmer, much more fulfilling and less annoying! I'd start it off with a large mug of tea/coffee in the sunshine (if you can). S xx

  10. Oh no, that would be my idea of a bad day too! I've just recommended a book to Jennifer and I have one in mind for you too CJ. It is "Flush: A Biography" by the incomparable Virginia Woolf. I'm reading "A Writer's Diary", being extracts from VW's voluminous diaries made by her husband Leonard and published in 1953. I treated myself to the Persephone edition so I'm savouring it. Also reading Laurie Lee's poetry, and will make time to take my slim volume to a quiet spot in the hills later today. Being outside always makes things better.

    1. Thanks for the recommendation Sarah, I'll look out for it. You're right about being outside, that does usually help. We live near Cider With Rosie country here, the countryside Laurie Lee grew up in is lovely - peaceful and pretty still on the whole. CJ xx

  11. I think some days are just like that aren't they? I had a whole week's worth of it last week. This week, things feel different, back to normal. Hope you've got your equilibrium back today. It's supposed to be sunny, which helps XX

  12. I hope your Monday blues has turned into a happy Tuesday dance! Some days are just a write-off. There must be something in the air, our dog has been extremely annoying, too. He keeps stealing cutlery from the dishwasher and carries them outside through his dog flap, never to be seen again. Also found my half eaten dish brush there. Anyway, I hope you get all your email problems sorted. Wishing you a good rest of the week xx

    1. P.S. Stamping your feet is a perfectly acceptable way to deal with a terrible Monday :-)

  14. oh my! a terrible horrible no-good very bad day. you're absolutely entitled to be a grump....we shouldn't feel obligated to be smiley when we're not feeling it. so there.

i just finished Love, Nina, on your recommendation. LOVED it! so, so funny. i automatically default to a cup of tea, a book and lying prone when days like that wear me down...no point in battling through as i see it. ;) i hope today is shaping up to be more enjoyable...xoxo

  15. That does sound like a rough Monday. I'm sorry. I don't think you sound like a spoiled diva at all, you have a lot going on with boys and puppy. I hope today has been looking up so far!

  16. It is always so frustrating when you don't seem to get anywhere on some days, especially if it is due to the computer too! Did you know there has been a problem with Microsoft and hotmail accounts the last few days? I go in the garden or out on a dog walk or just go and look at the sea to improve my day! Hope today has been better! Sarah x

  17. I love that you are so normal! I mean that in a very good way. We all have days like that, actually many of mine are like that and isn't it nice to get it all off your chest and realize we are all just like that too. Blogs that just show the beauty of life and not the real stuff are not for me.

  18. I hate days like that - I've had a few myself recently and it is so easy to just get completely wrapped up in the negative. Not so long ago, I heard or read something along the lines as asking yourself "Will I still be upset by this in 5 years" and I keep saying that to myself (sometimes even with 1 year, or 1 month, or 1 week instead!) and I've found it quite helpful in gaining a bit of perspective and not getting so worked up about things!

Lovely collection of photos in this post :)

I hope Tuesday was a better day.

  19. Here I am on Friday catching up on your Monday but really hoping the week improved for you. It may sound like you are complaining about lots of little things, but they do matter and they do add up... I could feel your pain. Especially where naughty dogs are concerned!
