Five on Friday

Joining in with Amy for Five on Friday.

1. Photos from a walk a couple of weeks ago. We haven't been on a proper walk since. Maybe this weekend if the weather is nice. I hear the sun may be shining on Saturday. I do love to walk at this time of year, and through the winter. I like to feel connected to the seasons and to the outside.

2. Imagine drifting downstream on one of those narrowboats. Intrigue or Destiny. Maybe even Petronella. (Anyone remember Blouse and Skirt on Brothers and Sisters? Only me? It probably is. I watched all sorts of rubbish in the casino staff room in the middle of the night. Prisoner Cell Block H!) I digress. I used to want to run off with a gypsy violinist. Still do a bit. Remember the girl in the Flake advert sitting on the back of the vardo? That was how I hoped my future would turn out.

3. For anyone thinking about advent calendars, I can do no better than point you towards Belgian Waffle's post about this year's selection. She has thoroughly analysed the market so you don't have to.

4. Please don't judge me too harshly on the Prisoner Cell Block H thing. The television is on all night in the casino staff room and it's impossible not to watch.

5. I shall leave you with a clip from the local free paper about new mayoral candidates for Bristol. The first one "is very much a one-ticket candidate". The second one "was thrown out of a council meeting by security staff in March". And the third one, oh the third one. You will love this one. He "has declared that he has given up making p*rn movies so that he can concentrate on his election campaign.  Mr L---, otherwise known as Johnny R*ckard, said in a statement: "For the time being at least my adult movie interests have been shelved because, quite frankly s*x has become boring and every day is like Groundhog Day. It has reached the point where I simply can no longer cope with having too many women in my life, both directly and indirectly.""

Stiff competition no? Sometimes it's so hard to know who to vote for.

  1. Glorious images from your walk dear C.J., lovely green gardens and beautiful grand houses...oh, how I would love to live in a mild and pleasant climate. It is 42 degrees Celsius here today, with a hot dry wind blowing from the north-west. No chance of sleeping comfortably tonight.
Not much of a choice with your mayoral candidates, they all sound like duds. I like to watch Escape to the Country, Antiques Roadshow and Vera.
    Have a great weekend!

  2. Fabulous photos. The Mayoral vote? Well sounds a bit like a French friend said when I said that somebody must have liked Sarkozy if he got voted in and she said it was more a case of the best of a bad bunch so you have a difficult choice there by the sound of it. What happens if none of them get any votes I wonder?!

  3. Last bit of your post really made me laugh. Love your pics too xx

  4. Just had a look at the Belgian Waffles post - hi-lar-ious. Thank you for the link. I'm slightly in awe of the swearing. My mum reads my blog...! Crikey, you have Hobson's choice with those mayoral candidates. Beautiful photos - I'm very taken with a couple of those boats and houses. Have a good weekend. S x

  5. You leave in a politically more exiting part of the world it seems. Oh Johnny.... I am utterly confused by the Belgian Waffle blog. There must be two with the same name? I am reading the one without the swearing. I am going to investigate. In the meantime, have a lovely weekend, hopefully with a dry walk. You may consider swimming instead? Cxx

  7. Ooh, they're certainly spoilt for choice in Bristol aren't they?! Love the photos - I do like a nice narrow boat. Do wrap up warm for your walk this weekend - it's supposed to be a bit on the nippy side. Have a good one. xx

  8. What a beautiful walk and such glorious pictures of the narrow boats. They certainly look idyllic but I bet it is quite a hard life. Laughed about the Mayor candidates, although realistically very sad...

  9. They only middle. of the night television that I have watch has been when waiting for endless hours in A and E when Martyn was having nosebleeds.

Maybe you should stand for Mayor as I am sure you would win against that one. Then they wonder about why people don't turn out to vote.

  10. You're spoilt for choice with those candidates, not! Lovely photos from your walk, I'm now going to click and read about all things advent calendar.

  12. Loved seeing the narrowboats, and what is it about tall, dark, handsome, vaguely dangerous men? What gorgeous houses those are and an ancient pond too by the look of it. Lovely. As for lucky Bristol how will they choose? I love that a porn star is finding sex boring these days. Apparently you can have too much of a good thing... :o) Have a lovely weekend my dear XX

  13. A wonderful selection of photos, which is more than I can say for the Mayoral candidates. I never watched TV during the night, I always read if I was awake. Flighty xx

  14. The castles and houses and longboats...oh what a magical selection of places to own, visit...dream about! Then the Cadbury ad was awesome...yes, it makes you want to be whisked away, doesn't it!? Very romantic. Then there's the mayorail rae in Bristol...poor Bristol! :-) I laughed my head off over candidate #3. I'm afraid I'd have to vote for #1 just to keep things... ahem... ordinary! :-)

  15. Hey CJ,

Oh my that Flake advert takes me back. I found it all rather 'charged' when I was younger ;))
My Dad is very anti the current mayor. He finds his green initiatives ludicrous, and doesn't like his red trousers. I would hazard a guess that he might vote for Johnny Rockhard, because he's a bit contrary like that. He was one of the few people to vote Tory in 80s Bedminster. Have a lovely weekend. Hope you get that walk. I'm gagging to do the same.

  16. Love the canal pictures...don't you just hanker after warmer weather and floating down the canal in one of those. As for elections...you should come to Jersey...our candidates are usually cattle or potato farmers...running an island....nah! Have a great weekend. Barbara

  18. Wow, just wow at those mayoral candidates. You really need a box at the bottom of the voting paper to tick for 'none of the above'!
Super narrow boat pictures, bet there's a gypsy violinist on at least one of those boats...
Have a super weekend, CJ. xx

  22. Oh geez ....I thought OUR election was going weird with Donald Trump running, but I think you have us beat with the ex p*rn star. YIKES!

  23. You never fail to make me laugh! And thank you for the Flake Advert! Iconic! Where would we be without letting our fantasies out to play once in a while.
I'll take the barge with the black witch on the side - would love to meet her owner!
    'Stiff' competition! Ha Ha!

  24. I do love narrow boats. My parents had a little wooden "sleeping" boat and they used to travel the inland waterways of England with good friends who owned a narrow boat. I've just read "Offshore" by Penelope Fitzgerald and I think you would enjoy it CJ. It reminded me of a very good friend who lived on a houseboat just beneath Kingston Bridge. Stepping aboard was like entering a different world. I might write about it one day. I was briefly involved in local politics, elected on the ecology ticket because I wanted to protect ancient trees and hedgerows, orchards, bats and dark skies. I stepped down when rumours started circulating about the councillor in charge of planning. The rumours were later brought to court and, well, I'm glad that's over. Have a good weekend. Hope you get out for a good long walk and have your chocolate fix.

  25. I think you will have to wrap up warm for that walk. It seems like winter has arrived!

  26. I love the photos of those house boats on the canal - what a different life! As for your gypsy violinist, please tell me that you have seen Johnny Depp in Chocolat? Oh my, I'd take him over the chocolate!

  27. Oh CJ, you have made me giggle! Thank you, and thank you, too, for gorgeous, inspirational photos. And don't tell anyone, but I LOVE Prisoner Cell Block H, I used to watch it in the middle of the night in 1987. Queen Bea, Judy, Meg, Erica, VT - FAB! x

  28. I'm in no position to judge anyone who watches whatever is on telly in the middle of the night as I frequently fall asleep on the sofa in front of the box and wake up wondering what on earth I'm tuned into. I chuckled when reading about your mayoral candidates, they sound a lot more lively than most! Eeeh, but you're a rum lot over in Bristol! Caro xx

  29. Vote, hmmm………..that's the best that area has to offer, is it?

    Glorious Autumnal photos!

  30. Oh CJ...I just don't know who I should vote for!

You always make me chuckle, and thank you for directly me towards Belgian Waffle. I suspect I'll be chuckling more there. xx

  31. Your images of the canal boats are lovely, that must have been a wonderful walk along the river. I could just see you in that cadbury flake advert! That not much choice for the mayor, I wonder which one my son is voting for! Sarah x
