A dry afternoon, too good to waste. We headed up high, where the mud is less and the views are good.
This is the top of Painswick Beacon. It was an old Iron Age hill fort over two thousand years ago. A Roman villa has been found not far from here as well. People have been climbing up to this point to look at the lie of the land since the beginning.
I think these are deadly nightshade berries. Nothing was eating them anyway.
As the sun started to set it dipped below the clouds, and beautiful winter light lit up the land. You may remember from previous trips here that this is the place that the little people like to practice for being in the SAS. The dips are perfect for setting ambushes.
Cotswold stone, lit by the setting sun. A handful of people actually get to live in places like this. I hope they know how lucky they are.
I'm happy with our non-Cotswold stone home though, happy to share it with these vibrant little people. Never for one minute forgetting how lucky I am.
As we drove home the sun set and the sky turned pink.
I hope you had some good weather today too, and that you managed a little outside time. It's what Sundays are for.
Beautiful pictures - wonderful light! I think your berries might be bryony - they are so colourful.
ReplyDeleteHi CJ, your outing looks wonderful....such gorgeous views.
ReplyDeleteI agree, those berries are black bryony....very poisonous, but pretty never the less.
We had a lovely sunset here today too....I'll share my pics tomorrow.
Definitely better to have a family than a grand house....though both might be nice :0)

Well... we're having thunder, lightning and rain.. so, I'm staying in by the fire. :-) But I loved going along with you to those ancient places.. and I so agree.. I do hope the people that live in those story book stone houses appreciate what they have. You'll have to show us what your house looks like from the outside! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)
ReplyDeleteActually it rained all day, which was perfect as far as I'm concerned. I sat and knitted away and was happy as a clam. :)
ReplyDeleteSuch lovely photos and what beautiful terrain! Those dips are fascinating - what made them? It looks as though many small glaciers had marched through millenia ago, or perhaps a river went a bit berserk and lashed out in several directions at once. The sunset light is beautiful, and you have so much autumn colour still. I love the shot of your little guys looking out from the top of the hill.
Lucky you. It rained all day long - so a day of crafting for me. Although we couldn't have gone very far - Matt hurt his knee at rugby yesterday and is on crutches! Hope you have a great week. x
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos! Glad you got to spend time outside. We did as well :)
ReplyDeletelooks like a truly beautiful way to spend an afternoon x
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! We are so lucky to live where we have access to such scenery aren't we?
ReplyDeleteHello CJ, what lovely scenery, Sun and everything....we had constant sheeting rain - all day...so a quick dash out to the garden centre, followed by baking, crochet, coffee, newspapers, homework........x
ReplyDeleteПотрясающе! Очень красивая прогулка!
ReplyDeleteСпасибо!
What a wonderful Sunday! It was cold and wet here so we stayed indoors. I would much rather have been out and about in such beautiful countryside as you visited! xx
ReplyDeleteLooks a wonderful day out, I took the hound for a walk yesterday & then spent the rest of my Sunday catching up with the housework. The house has never looked so clean! The evening was spent knitting.
ReplyDeleteLovely photographs, CJ, looks like you had a great day. You are living in a beautiful part of the UK!
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful. beautiful pictures CJ, the perfect afternoon for all by the sounds of it.
ReplyDeleteKate x
Beautiful light! I don't think we are going to see anything like that up here for the next few months. Aren't family walks just the best? Have a lovely week. x
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful wintry light you've caught there - I especially like the eleventh picture down (yes I counted them!) with the strange underground undulations. Lovely family memories in the making x Jane
ReplyDeleteReally beautiful images, I especially like the third one.
ReplyDeleteLucky you, it rained here all weekend. As Sue says terrific pictures, and I like the third one as well. Have a good week. xx
ReplyDeleteIt really was the perfect weather to get outside. I even got out into the back garden for a well needed clear up and away. We have had similar adventures here. The UK is an amazing place. All that history right underneath your feet, or on your doorstep. I don't think that I could ever live anywhere else.
ReplyDeleteLeanne xx
What a fabulous outing. It really makes a difference at this time of year when the weather's good enough to get out and about. Wonderful photos.
ReplyDeleteGlorious photographs dear C.J., the UK is most definitely a green and pleasant land. Such a lovely place to spend a Sunday.
ReplyDeletexoxoxo ♡
Beautiful autumnal shots CJ. I love the stone house, something out of a Catherine Cookson novel! The weather was just wet, wet, wet over the weekend, and now I'm back at work... sunshine! Typical! Have a wonderful week x
ReplyDeleteOooh that looks so beautiful. Joining the queue of people dying to live in that glorious stone house! xx
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, CJ - can I come visit you, pretty please? How beautiful - what a sunset! That picture is gorgeous. And the stone houses, rolling green fields, ... It is looking pretty good over there!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely winter walk and beautiful views. No hills to climb around here, just the wide open fens, though I tell myself they have their own charm!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful day! Those pictures of the sun hitting the grassy field are stunning and make me wish I was running through them now:) Glad you got a break in the rain so that you could all enjoy some fresh air. Hope you're having a wonderful start to your week!
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful photos. It's all starting to look wintry, with the bare trees and pink sky. I love being out at that time of day, then rushing to get back into the warm when the sun starts to set. Sunday afternoons were made for walks like that. x
ReplyDeleteBeautiful land, beautiful views! You always seem sincere and grateful for your good life CJ and it makes me thankful for mine as well.
ReplyDeleteI need to retrain my son to content with the nature walks. We did manage a city wander for a good 3 hours or so this weekend, just the two of us. I'll see if I can get us a little closer to base state this upcoming one ...
Nightshade berries, reminds of the Hunger Games!
ReplyDeleteHi CJ - the views are amazing. I love this time of year.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful photos with the lovely light and your boys able to run free! Super Sunday x
ReplyDeleteWhat a day! You have so many lovely places to explore with your family and the beauty of them all blows me away. These pictures are stunning.
ReplyDeleteMan CJ!!! That VIEW!!!! My goodness!!!! I feel like I tell you all the time how beautiful your part of the world is but it just transports me every time I see photos! And those dips in the ground are like works of art!!!! And yes you are blessed! What an outstanding day! Here is to a wonderful week!! Nicole xoxo
ReplyDeleteSuch a nice day with great scenery. So interesting!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos from a great day out.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful pictures! And yes, those Cotswold stone homes are something to covet, but I bet they are very hard to heat in the winter. My cousin and I are talking about the possibility of returning to the Cotswolds next fall. I hope it works out. You live in a very beautiful place!
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures! The lighting is just beautiful. Looks like the little people had a lot of fun in beautiful surroundings!
ReplyDeleteYour walk looked so beautiful. It is gray and raining here today, I am loving every minute of it especially now that I am home from work.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Meredith
That evening light is golden and gorgeous. The earth looks like green sea waves in some of your shots with all that light and shadow.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful images, CJ. I really love the way all that greenness looks in the light. The old house is intriguing. I would love to know what it's like inside, and how the people use all that space.
ReplyDeleteThese blog posts will become very precious memories as your boys grow up - I wish blogs had been around when my son was younger, so many memories that are in my head. Looks like you had a really good run around outside with good weather; it was pretty dismal here although a tiny touch of good weather hit us on Monday (now sadly vanished). I shouldn't be too envious of the beautiful farmhouse - my niece lived in an old farmhouse for a couple of years while inbetween houses and says she's never been so cold!! Those old houses are a nightmare to heat and probably lack all sorts of mod cons that we take for granted! Your pic does make it look cosy though, with that smoke coming from the chimney! Btw, is that undulating grass natural? It looks like some kind of Crazy Golf set up! Hope you're having a good week, Caro xx
ReplyDeleteStunning photos CJ, still touches of autumn but winter creeping in too now. I love the vibrant green lichen on the branch, strangely beautiful! Enjoy what's left of the week.
ReplyDeleteJane xx
Gosh that's a stunning part of the world you have right there, especially with the evening light x
ReplyDeleteps Don't forget to e-mail me a postal address for the giveaway, coalvalleyview at gmail dot com xxx
I have been there! And it's as lovely as you depict it. What a perfect excursion for intrepid children.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pictures
ReplyDeleteEverything in your posts always looks so familiar, because of course it is. I spent the first half of my childhood in Cheltenham, lived in Bath as a young adult, my sister lived in Bristol for years, I have family in Stroud ... I know your patch so well, love it too. And wherever we've lived we always headed upwards to avoid mud in winter too!
ReplyDeleteThis makes me yearn for England. It has been too many years, and there is so much of it to explore. Hopefully some time in the next few years.
