A disappointing result

I cannot lie, I am bitterly disappointed about the weekend's results. Although not entirely unexpected, the slide late on to a veritable gulf between the two was a crushing blow. There is always that moment at the start when you think that it will go your way. Ever the optimist, I always set out with huge expectations. Dreams. I picture the victory. Sadly, this time it was not to be. But I shall not be crushed for long. For there is next time, always next time. And that is the thing with Forest Green Rovers, you cannot keep them down. They may have gone crashing 6-2 out of the Emirates Cup, but next week it's Swindon Town and we will SHOW THEM NO MERCY.

Apologies for the rather blurry photo. My camera is in need of repair but it's one of those jobs that slides ever onwards down the to-do list, never quite making the top. Part of the problem is that I don't have a clue where to take it. Handy repair shops aren't that common any more. And they probably aren't open anyway, so I shall slide it a bit further down the to-do list and Tackle It Another Day.

The two older urchins did some helping out today as I had a mountain of work to get through, which was astonishing and rather pleasing (the help, not the work). The middle one made lunch and dinner and the oldest one raked some leaves up. All with very little moaning. I am wondering if they are up to something, it was so unexpected and surprising. We are not one of those families where people help other people out on the whole, rather one of those families where mother does everything and crashes around the place furiously because no one else ever lifts a finger. I wonder if the winds of change are blowing my way.

The middle boy made me laugh the other day when he said that dinner was 'a lot better than usual'. Oh my. Although I suspect it was today as well. I would be helped if the littlest boy didn't keep getting me to buy obscure ingredients so that he can work through his school cookery booklet (no cooking allowed in school any more) and then not getting round to it, so I have to try and insert them into some sort of nutritional meal.

At school now they just watch while the teacher does the cookery, although they are allowed to try it afterwards. Apparently on Muffin Day, everyone else on his table left to go home, so he got all of their muffin allowance himself. He lives for that kind of moment. It was sausage roll demonstrations the other day. Apparently (and I quote) there are so many ways to wrap a sausage roll. I had no idea.

Hope everyone is well and cheery out there. Good news on the US election results no? But a real shame about Forest Green. Can't win 'em all.

  1. I'm pleased to hear that your sons are stepping up to help you out, you are obviously doing something right! How nice of you to support the littlest to become a gourmet chef! That should pay off in the long run. Yes, we're (the majority of us) very thrilled to be nearly done with one of the most negative and divisive presidents in the history of our country. ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  2. Oh CJ you minx had us wondering where you were going with that originally.

Fingers crossed for Forest Green’s next match 🤞🏼

  3. Is cooking not allowed in schools due to Covid or is it just policy now? If the latter, then that's a shame. I used to love my girls' cookery day - it meant that I didn't have to make dinner that night! Who knew that sausage rolls were so diverse?! We're holding off on the leaf raking for another week in the hope that we can just do it once. Go Forest Green! xx

  4. You had me going there for a second ;). I can imagine your disappointment. Be thankful your boy wants the tricky ingredient in the first place. Mine were always very diffident about anything ‘ not normal’. Good that they are stepping up to help even if it is only one day! Hope you have a more relaxed day today and that you are on track with your writing count B x

  6. You almost had me and I was about to stop following you... but yes, excellent news from the US if not so good about the football. Pleased to hear the lads are stepping up to help. I was also one of those mums that did everything, mostly because it was easier but I have to say they have all grown up to be excellent cooks, making most of the meals, doing the shopping and the eldest two doing all of the nappy changing etc for their babies. So maybe they were watching and learning

  7. I do plenty of crashing around myself, and everyone is watching some sort of sport on TV and doesn't even seem to notice my dramatic heavy sighs. All the best to you CJ, I have missed you.

  8. That was a good way to get our attention. Plenty of smiles about the meals, etc.
I'm well and reasonably cheery thanks. Have a good, relatively crashless week. xx

  9. It's a good thing I flatter myself to know you so well, I might have been worried.....;)

I live for the day someone other than me makes lunch and dinner....and cleans up afterwards. xoxo

  10. Am not (at all) a Trump supporter, not even as a UK onlooker but really, people would stop following you if you were? (A comment here is saying that.) Very petty.

Tolerance is about accepting differences of opinion and trying to find middle ground. If you want people to change their views, you set a good example to follow and aim for polite dialogue that is respectful. The left is often as obnoxious as the right and extremely judgemental. Are people wanting division or reconciliation? Showing kindness is a good way forward. Stereo-typing is not considered a good thing so perhaps we shouldn't do it - to anyone?

  11. It’s a pity isn’t it as I think cookery is one of the most important life skills that there is and watching someone else cooking is no substitute for hands on experience.

  12. My son has informed me that now we live in Swindon support for the team is needed- so may the best team win! On the other hand the other two insist I should remain loyal to Oxford.

  13. Maybe your urchins have turned a corner and realised that helping out is important? It does happen... My daughter has gone beyond that, she is now telling me what to do and how to do it.... Apparently there is a place in the cupboard for golden syrup and it is not next to the Marmite. I hope you can get your camera fixed. It is difficult to get things fixed, isn't it? Good luck with the Swindon Town game! xx
