Sshhh

Did I say something about having a productive week this week? I'm sure I did. Remind me not to make such predictions or express such wishes ever again. The dear little dog managed to swallow something and ended up in dog hospital having an operation to remove it on Tuesday. The staff were wonderful, and although they didn't manage to pull the item out the same way it went in, they looked after him well when they operated. The middle boy and I were touched to see on the (lengthy) itemised bill, an entry marked 'Warming patient'. When the night vet rang me with an update, he said Bertie had got a bit cold, after a long anaesthetic, but they were keeping him warm.

Needless to say, I spent most of the two days he was away not really focusing on anything and leaping up every time the phone rang. He is home now, and on painkillers and antibiotics and I am living in fear of it happening again, or him eating something toxic to dogs such as chocolate or sultanas or him running off and getting into trouble. Honestly, my anxiety levels are through the roof. I have no idea how to keep him safe, it is so HARD.

The thing they removed was like a bit of hard rubbery pipe. We couldn't identify it at all. I think he must have picked it up on a walk. The hospital had two other cockapoos in, also for eating things they shouldn't have done.

Would you like a peek at the patient? Ssh though, because he is sleeping, and if he wakes up he will starting jumping about the place with no regard at all for his stitches.

He is on bed rest for ten days.

In other news, I am several thousand words behind in NaNoWriMo. I have seven days in which to write 18,000 words. If I do 3,000 a day I'll be fine :)

I had a little tidy of the garden while the dog was away, in lieu of concentrating on work things. Leaves swept up, anything that looked like it could be swallowed by a small dog removed, tulips in. The apple trees have been pruned and there are tiny little rosehips there, where a rambling rose flowered all summer long.

Tooth dramas continue, now it is the littlest boy's turn, with a couple of wobbly ones. There is apparently someone in his class who gets £10 from the tooth fairy. TEN POUNDS! That's $12.82 for my American friends. £200 in total for all of the teeth. Round here the tooth fairy usually forgets and has to be prompted. And it is guaranteed that she will not be leaving ten pounds. She is from a different division.

Any little dramas with you, or is it all peace and relaxation? I am hoping for the latter for you. Enjoy the rest of the weekend all. CJ xx

  1. Oh I’m so pleased Bertie is recovering. I empathise totally with all your anxiety. Being a pet owner may even be harder than being a mother and that’s saying something. Hope the next ten days goes well and no more foreign objects are swallowed. Good luck on 3,000 words a day. YOU CAN DO IT! As for tooth fairy prices. Ridiculous. May the week ahead be a good one. 2. Poor Bertie! I'm so glad that he's recovering nicely, but good luck with that bed rest! I knew about dogs and chocolate, but sultanas are a new one to me. The tooth fairy in our area was never so generous! Good luck with the writing. xx

  3. Oh goodness, poor Bertie! Good luck with the bed rest. When my Peanut had her operation four years ago, we had to bring her back in the very next day because she tore her stitches on the first walk. She never quite grasped the concept of walking slowly in her youth. As for drama, can I just say "first attack of migraine EVER"? Here's hoping for a great weekend for you, and a better week next week.

  4. Oh!
I am so sorry for your precious pup!
I am glad he is home and resting, and I hope you are able to do the same.
I know about anxiety all too well, and I pray you are free of that soon!

  5. Oh no! Poor Bertie ...and poor you too. I hope next week is quieter for you. Gosh tooth fairy rates have rocketed!

  6. I know just how you felt when Bertie was in hospital. We have that to go through again in Tuesday. At the moment she is in blissful oblivion unlike us.
Tivvy has had so many operations poor darling and she is 13 now so it;s a big worry. Tivvy is officially my sister's dog but we sort of share.

  7. Poor little Bertie and poor you for having this happen. I'm just glad you got him the help he needed to survive this. Hopefully he won't do this again. Our tooth fairy only left 50 cents, back in the day. :-) I just asked my grandson and the tooth fairy gave him $1.00. No.. it's not calm here. Our son and his family are moving so they are loading up stuff and taking it to the new house and back again for more. At least all we have to do is watch. LOL! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  8. Oh my goodness CJ, what a week. I hope poor old Bertie is recovering well? It breaks my heart to hear he has in all likelihood been in agony because of someone's careless attitude to littering. It is so stressful when a pet gets sick, isn't it? I hope you have a relaxing weekend, you deserve it. Talking of sultanas: Jack vomited what seemed like a whole little box full of raisins. I can't stand those little boxes of raisins, Alistair gets them with his school lunches and always brings a few home. I made a big fuss over the vomit and the poor dog to highlight the fact that raisins/sultanas are toxic for dogs. Hope Jack's kidneys are ok, hard to tell really. Good luck with the writing :-) xx

  9. Dear CJ, You need a rest, dear girl. Is there any chance after the words are written? Could you not bung on a sickness or something and have the household look after you? No, I suppose not....... You need some mothering yourself, instead of being the one who holds the household together. Could you send them all on a holiday away together, dog included and just rest while they are away? No that probably wouldn't work either. C.J. we will hope and pray that life becomes a little more restful for you, although with Christmas around the corner, life usually gets a lot more mad. If you have the time, please give Bertie a cuddle from me. Regards, Robyn

  10. Oh dear, these naughty dogs who will eat anything. I'm constantly on alert for things that Hector might chew up. But pleased Bertie is now okay. Be kind to yourself about that daily word count... not important in the grand scheme of things. And as for £10 from the tooth fairy... the tooth fairy has more money than sense in that household!

  11. The Tooth Fairy never arrived the first night in our house - I too remember being horrified at the amount other kids got - traitorous tooth fairies the lot of them. Same with Christmas stockings! Argh! Don't get me started!

  12. You'll have to teach him those two little words that all gun dogs have to learn.....DROP IT!....; saying that while physically taking the offending article from his mouth. He's part cocker so it's an expected trait. It does work, be patient. We've had loads over our 70years!

  13. Poor Bertie, I hope that he soon recovers. I'm sure that you'll soon catch up with the writing.
Thankfully all's quiet here. Thanks, and you too. xx

  14. I refused to pay for teeth. I said, "I made them so I am not paying you for them." No tooth fairy in our house! Mean, but I don't care.

  15. Oh dear Bertie, what a worry for you all. Daffodil bulbs are bad for dogs too. Pop chewed one once. I was having nervous breakdowns for hours but she was ok. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Our tooth fairy used to leave a pound, which represented twenty years’ worth of inflation from my day. Two pounds if the tooth was in a cup of water because (as an old friend of mine once told L) she enjoyed diving in to retrieve it 😉 xx

  16. Your poor baby, I swear they are as bad as the kids as far as stress and anxiety. I am constantly on the look out for something to be wrong with mine, well that is because there is usually something wrong with mine. That is a huge amount of money for teeth! Little Buddy got $2 in bills and 6 quarters from the tooth fairy for loosing two teeth in an hour. He was not pleased with the bills, he only wanted coins! I told him the tooth fairy will not be coming back unless he appreciates what she leaves. Take a deep breath my friend, motherhood is challenging for kids and dogs!

  17. Were they gold plated teeth? The tooth fairy has visited a couple of times in the last month here and only left $1 each time. It would seem she's a bit stingy but she's happy with that title. Poor Bertie and poor you. I hope he recovers well and doesn't bounce about too much for you. xx Susan

  18. Oh my goodness! What a week. Poor Bertie – hope he's well on the mend and tolerating the 10 days bed rest... Hope you are coping ok with it, too. Not easy at all. £10 for a tooth?! That's bonkers. When the tooth fairy remembered to visit here, my lot used to get £1 and even that seemed extortionate. Hope you're able to take a breather at some point, and try not to worry about Bertie when he's out and about. You don't need extra things to think about! Good luck with the writing (but don't beat yourself up if you don't manage to write much – you can do it another time). Sam x

  19. No! Your furry child in hospital for an operation, how terrible. I hate not being able to explain situations like that to my dogs over the years. However like you, we have some extremely caring vet people. So glad he's home, but 10 days or rest! How can you force that?
£10 for a tooth! That's utterly insane, surely a £1 is more than fair. Plus isn't NaNoWriMo meant to be fun? Don't stress girl x

  20. Oh....poor, POOR Bertie! Sam ate an alleged indestructible bone when he was 18 months, he had the same op and I was panicking about him bursting his stitches, it's a nightmare for sure. Hope he recovers beautifully! A tenner for a tooth....what insanity! Glad you got some writing done. Here's to some peace and quiet.xxx

  21. Ten pounds!?!? Around here, it's usually a dollar, maybe two if we're feeling flush. What's that, less than a pound? Our tooth fairy wouldn't last five minutes over there, ha. I hope Bertie is doing better by now? That sounds like a painful situation for him before the surgery. I hope you've been able to get some writing done...but no pressure!

  22. good heavens!! I thought eating in appropriate items was the sole province of Labradors....although I vaguely recall poodles being also prone to such things...so we shall blame that half of his heritage. Ye gods, though!! What a worry!! Glad to hear he came out of it all relatively unscathed. If only this would be a lesson to him.....

Thankfully my children have finished losing their teeth...I dare say I couldn't keep up with the rate of inflation. :) xoxo
