Five on Friday

Joining in with Amy and Five on Friday.

1. Photos from a stroll up a nearby mountain. Well, more of an anthill really but we pretended it was a mountain. Isn't the countryside beautiful at the moment.

2. Flowers from a verge in town. I've seen a lot more of this sort of planting this year, along with unmown verges filled with insect friendly plants. Have local authorities finally caught on do you think? I do hope so.

3. Enjoying July. Enough heat to make skin turn salty. Sports day with the thick smell of sunscreen and lots of drama. Nothing quite compares to the Year R (4 and 5 year olds) skipping race.

4. The allotment has got away from me this year. I'm being marvellously calm about it all. What's the worst that can happen? I have courgettes, what more could I need.

5. Bracing myself for the start of the summer holidays. It will be lively, no doubt about it. The littlest boy brought sweets home from school and gave a whole packet to each brother. He really does love them so much, he gives them a big hug in the mornings sometimes when he first sees them. After he gave out the sweets there was a bit of an altercation. The biggest boy said to him, "You know the tangy bit on the outside of these sweets? It's made of pug." It's amazing how they know the very worst thing to say isn't it. I've told them we will be concentrating on being lovely to each other all summer. Wish me luck with that.

Hoping you all have a very good summer weekend.

  1. Beautiful summery photos; I love the wildflower one. We have a few roundabouts with similar poppies and cornflowers around here - they look fantastic, much better than the usual marigolds. How lovely that the littlest boy adores his big brothers. The sweet comment made me chuckle - good luck with that summer loving! xx

  3. It is amazing what just a few days of sunshine mixed with a good watering can do to nature! Love your wildflower photos very much. Wishing you luck and patience and lots of fun for the summer holidays. We have just survived week 4, 3 to go... missing the big ones, the bickering is minimal. The pug comment could have come from my oldest... your poor little one, being kind and thanked with having planted a troubling idea in his head. I still look at tinned ravioli with wonder... after a comment my dad made when I was little (back in the time when tinned ravioli was normal food). Have a great weekend. xx

  4. Ha, ha, love the brotherly love, and good luck for the summer! I would say that was more than an anthill, with nice views from the top. We have some very pretty verges round here, it really does gladden the heart.
    Have a good weekend
    Caz xx

  5. A harvest landscape burnished by the sun. Hay making has been happening here. Love that explosion of colour of the wild flowers. Children can be so cruel sometimes can't they? Our middle one is particularly adept at barbed comments. The other two don't indulge in it thank goodness! Stuffed courgettes for tea? Xx

  6. My veg patch has gotten away from me too this year, do not know what is wrong with me! Lovely lovely photos. Just to let you know your link form Amy's % on Friday is not working and takes everyone back to Amy. I just goggled you so I could come and let you know... Have a great week x

  7. Wow, look at those veiws! We are looking forward to the holidays although it will be hard keeping track of one of my daughters now she's found her independence! ;) xxx

  8. I've got mostly courgettes this year too. I added some raised veg beds at the back of the garden in late winter, but then was having early pregnancy exhaustion around seed sowing time, so have about six plants scattered across them. Only the courgettes look cheerful and are slowly taking over everything else too. I don't really like eating courgette.

  9. Isn't it great that so many wild flowers are being sown this year. It seems to be catching on everywhere. Growing vegetables always starts off well and then life takes over; enjoy jour courgettes. Hope the sunny weather lasts for your summer holiday. B x

  10. That last photograph is really beautiful. If only they would plant up motorway embankments like this,

  11. Oh, well done on the mountain strolling in this heat (my walking is currently nocturnal; definitely cooler but the dog's confused). Wonderful picture of the swathe of verge flowers (the council over the river from here have done something similar the length of one of the town's approach roads). In guerilla gardener mode (our councillors are still demolition focused), we scattered several packets of wildflower seeds locally. Not one flower. Wishing you all a brilliant summer break.

  12. Wild flower verges here too. They look beautiful. I think town councils are finally catching on. Aaw! Your littlest boy :)

  13. Definitely a mountain compared to anything we have around here ( I live in East Anglia). Wishing you a long hot summer of being lovely to each other 😜

  14. A post that made me smile, hoping that you get the summer you want and everyone is nice to each other. I missed all the banter and squabbles once the girls had left home but fortunately they all come back with their families for the summer so I can live it all again.

  15. Hey Cj,
Such beautiful pictures of the countryside. Don't get me started on brothers and verbal cruelty. The eldest and youngest can be very barbed. The middle one lets his fists do the talking. Oh for a Waltonesque family...
    Have a lovely weekend.

  16. The countryside is beautiful at the moment and thank goodness the weather has allowed us to enjoy it lately. Love the wildflowers photo. Ah, brotherly love - sisterly love used to be a tad challenging at times in our house. Have a fun weekend CJ xx

  20. Lovely pictures of the summer countryside! Have you tried courgette lasagna? Good Food have a really good recipe :) And siblings always know just the right thing to say don't they?!

  21. Aw your little is the sweetest. Such a good time/age. I'm sure the olders are dears to him but they are older and his sweetness is TOO easy to prey on. My son is working at camp with the 4 and 5 year olds and says they are big huggers. Having no siblings he has been bathing in this sweet affection. I love the stories of the intense games of tag.

I started wheezing thinking about walking up the hill. hehe.

  22. Your summer looks bright and colorful.. I adore seeing your countryside with the stately homes with their nice big acreages. Be sure and show your boys our new boat, I just posted lots of photos. I hope you have lots of nice courgettes! ((hugs)), Teresa :-)

  24. Ohhh those wild flowers - wonderful. Reception class races are the best, stopping in the middle to wave to someone! Have a great summer and I hope peace and harmony reigns (some of the time).

  26. I love those photos from the top of the hill. Wow, it looks like a picture book. The wildflowers are incredible, just exactly what I always picture when I think of English countryside, especially the red poppies. I hope you all have a wonderful summer!

  27. What a lovely picture of wild flowers. I hope to make space for a patch of them on my new allotment next year. I'm battling bind weed like a member of the SAS at the moment on my patch and hope you haven't got that to contend with.

  28. Beautiful area to roam in. I do wish you luck with keeping things lovely amongst siblings for the summer! :)

  29. Good luck with your summer! I have two little grandsons for seven weeks this summer and a big focus has been on helping them 'be kind to each other'.
    Your views are gorgeous!

  30. Every day I drive over a small but busy roundabout and the centre is filled with the most stunning wild flower planting. It's an absolute riot of rainbow colours and I'd like to photograph it but I don't think it's possible - it's a bit too inaccessible!

I hope the holidays are treating you well and the boys are being lovely to each other. Xx

  31. I bet it felt like a mountain on the way up. What beautiful green-ness all around. And fabulous wildflowers too. Good luck with the loveliness. It's no better with girls. They decided to buy two 'sisters' charm necklaces the other day; they each have half of a heart that says "sisters by chance, friends by choice". The following day they were back to bating each other, sigh. xx

  32. The picture of the flowers made me sigh out loud. Beautiful! And I imagine they were even brighter and more breath taking in real life! As for the sibling "shenanigans" I love it. It's so amusing, especially since I am not involved ;). Makes me think back on my childhood with my sisters. Wishing you luck, however.

  33. Ah that first shot is just the epitome of the English Countryside and it makes my heart swell to look at it.
