Is gravy wrestling even a thing?

Photos from a walk by the sea the other day.  The weather's been so glorious, it honestly felt like summer.  We made a little fire from dry driftwood. It was a perfect late summer moment.  I felt a damp chill in the air this evening though. Here comes autumn.

Anyone watching the rugby?  I've seen a smidgeon of it, but my enjoyment of it is marred slightly by not understanding it at all.  The biggest boy has started playing it at school, so there's quite a bit of shoving and scrapping between brothers, which they try to convince me is rugby.  To be honest it just looks like any other day of brother bashing, but what do I know.

I had a conversation with the biggest boy this morning about how much I hate food fights.  He asked me if I was including the big tomato thing in Italy. I said I was.  He asked me if I was also including gravy wrestling. Say what now??? Is that even a thing? I daren't enquire further.

That's all I have today. Unless you want a joke from the Beano Annual that the littlest boy had to explain to me.  What do you call a ham that you really miss?  A porcupine.  (Pork-you-pine).  Sigh.

  1. Just told hubby the joke, he groaned! Hee hee!! I think it is very funny! Now, this gravy wrestling, well, I reckon that if anyone could be a gravy wrestler your three boys could do it! xx

  2. There's jello wrestling but I think that's more of an "adult" thing. Haha. I really like that joke. I'm going to tell my kids right now. I have one for you too, we heard it on a kids' radio show the other day. What do you call an alligator who wears a vest? An investigator! I'll get my coat...

  3. Following Teresa's good example, yet again, I consulted Google about gravy wrestling. Then I consulted Google about Rugby rules, and Italian tomato fights. Had you not explained about pork you pine I would have had to consult Google about that as well. I am reminded of the evening over 30 years ago when our oldest son defined break dancing for me by spinning on his head in our foyer. Now he is nearly forty six and he gets cricks in his neck. Should your sons try gravy wrestling, and tomato fights may they suffer no ill effects, and I hope rugby involvement does them no harm, also. Thanks for the delightful photos from your walk by the sea as well. xx

  4. We have been very lucky with the weather this week and your walk by the sea looks heavenly. I've watched a bit of the rugby - more to be able to talk about it with my Dad, although I do prefer it to football. I'd never heard of gravy wrestling either - must follow Teresa and Gracie's example and Google it! Love the joke. xx

  5. Ah, autumn at the seaside. Perfect. The joke reminds me of the one my (then very little, now very big) boy made up in the back of the car halfway up the A19. 'Knock knock.' Who's there? 'Banana.' Banana who? 'Banana Jenkins.' No? Maybe you had to be there....

  8. How lovely to see those nut-brown knees in October. It has been such a good end to the summer. Never been keen on rugby here. Luckily my son was a footballer and we avoided rugby apart from obligatory school stuff. Both children loved the fast and fun mixed tag rugby they used to play at primary school but the jump from that to needing mouth guards in year 7 is quite severe. Sunny here today so we're just heading off to the coast in shorts to top up our vitamin D. Have a great day CJ.

  9. Hmmm, I needed the explanation too. How about this one which my kids thought very funny when they were little. Why did the boy fall off his bike? Because someone threw a fridge at him. What??? That's the sort of jokes they came home from school with. The rugby's on in our house but I have to admit that I haven't even glanced at it, Mick tends to watch it alone.

  10. What lovely photo's - it has been glorious of late hasn't it.

Like many others I too consulted google about the gravy wrestling and it is an annual charity event held in the Lancashire village of Stacksteads. That's what I love about these Isles ... we do have some super fun charity events at times!

Enjoy the rest of Sunday and have a good week next week.

    All the best Jan

  11. I missed that one too, my brain must be really losing it. And is there such a thing as gravy wrestling? My oldest has now started to play rugby on a club team, I have no idea what he will be doing but it sure seems like he will get hurt.
    Hugs,

  12. In Canada we call these early fall days that are more like summer "Indian Summer." They are some of my favourite days of the year. We had quite a few days like this when I was in Ireland. Such a treat!

I'm never been a fan of rugby, playing or watching. Flighty xx

  14. Hey CJ,
The weather really has been wonderful, hasn't it? Grey skies today, and Marc is mooching about forecasting heavy rain for the week. One of Olly's favourite jokes: Why are pirates called pirates? Because they arrrrr!

  18. The weather has been fantastic hasn't it? We have been outside as muc as we can. Love your photos, esp the fire. Umm, we have been watching the rugby but in a befuddled state, we sit there and ask such questions as "well, why is that a penalty?" We do wonder if it just legalised brawling!

  21. I love that fire photograph!
And yes, gravy wrestling happens in these parts (alongside the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships). Very sophisticated.
    Have a great week :)

  22. Gravy wrestling?? Bizarre. Any form of food-fighting bemuses me. The mess, the waste! Who clears it up?! That reveals my inner-fastidious person... Lovely photos, especially the fire on the beach. Boys, sticks, fire – mine love it too. To be fair, so do girls. There's something very elemental about it. Hope you had a good weekend. Sam x PS Loved the joke.

  23. I have to agree about food fights - totally awful. I hate to see food being wasted in any way at all. Funny joke.

  26. Gravy wrestling?? I had no idea! A couple of years ago we had a family dough ball fight on my birthday (fuelled by a bottle of cava) and now every time I make dough balls or it's someone's birthday, the kids hopefully ask if we can have a food fight. They answer is always no! The crumbs went everywhere. Lovely beach pictures, the weather has been fab, hasn't it? I'm glad you've been spending time writing, CJ, your peach post was just genius :-) xx

  27. gravy wrestling? Wow. Lovely photos and blog, we've had great weather here too, it's been better than summer, but I do like autumn :)

  28. Ha ha like that...like any other day of brother bashing.
And I am with you there: not understanding anything at all about Rugby.

  29. Gravy wrestling committees have probably put in a bid to have it recognised as an official sport.

  30. I totally knew gravy wrestling was a thing, but only because we have friends who used to live in Rossendale where it takes place. In Wales we have Bog Snorkelling.

  31. Beautiful photographs which exactly capture the beautiful autumn sunshine of the last few days. I can't comment on gravy wrestling but do recall MasterM telling me about a rather disreputable dinner where cream cakes ended up on the ceiling.

  32. Haha I love the title of this post. I agree, food fights are the biggest most offensive waste in my opinion :(

  33. LOL I fear that I finally found something I don't want gravy on. I love gravy. This makes me question that love.

Also, I think the Pork-you-pine joke is brilliant. Seriously I ran off to tell someone immediately. We don't need to discuss their reaction, since I love it enough for all people.

  35. sometimes someone taking more than a fair share of gravy almost leads to wrestling, so I can well believe it is actually a thing.......

  36. I really love that last shot! I love the idea of building a small fire and watching the sea put it out in the end. Such Famous Hijinks! And have a lovely Mother's Day in 2017 x
