Pressing on regardless

Photos from a quick walk in the park on Saturday afternoon while the boys scooted/birdwatched. I ventured into the woods with my camera. It was steep and sticky. I could just see a path at the bottom though, so I started making my way down. There was a bit that was really slidey that I knew I wouldn't be able to go down without falling. And yet, there was that path at the bottom. I eased a foot out a little way. Then another one and then bam, it was all over. Straight down on my arse in thick mud. Mud on my camera, mud on my coat, mud up inside my skirt and a lovely deep wodge of mud scooped neatly up by my watch strap. Oh the satisfaction of being right, I knew it was too steep and slippy for me. I also knew I would do it anyway. What is wrong with me?

I slithered the rest of the way to the bottom holding on to thorny things and ridiculously thin twigs. But I made it! All the way to the ... wait a minute ... oh ... it's not a path after all, it's a miniature railway track that is fenced in and I need to climb all the way back up. Sigh. It was a lovely sunny day though.

I've been enjoying these last days of January. Cold, dark, damp. I love an excuse to hunker down at home. Eyeing the pile of books waiting to be read. Knitting round and round and round on the Black Thing. Eating scrumptious things. Repeatedly making rice pudding with double cream in it.

The boys are waiting for drier days to do the scooty/skateboardey things more I think. They have been watching instructional Youtube videos on my laptop. The other day I turned it on and there was one entitled, "HUGE Scooter Drop Off Highway Bridge!" Should I be worried?

The older two are pressing on with the magic. The middle boy is after a paper shredder. Apparently he knows a trick involving six envelopes, a shredder and a ten pound note. It won't be my ten pound note, I can tell you that.

Hope all are well and pushing on regardless.

  1. Just think, if you'd been taking photos as you slipped you could have recorded the entire thing. Did I tell you I fell over running the other day? I felt a complete idiot. My husband just laughed :o( xx

  2. Hey CJ,
I did a spectacular trip the other day. It was one of those where you trip, stumble, canter while trying to regain your balance and then trip again. Oh and the day after Boxing Day I fell over on Porthmeor running from a wave and got soaked to my knickers. I was congratulated by several strangers.
    You're amongst friends xx

  3. You are an explorer, that's what you are. Exploring is full of dangers and sometimes risks must be taken. Hope your bottom is not bruised. I fell flat on my face not so long ago when I thought jogging along a narrow path alongside the river. It was steep and there were lots of roots. Only my dignity was hurt. Yep, pressing on no matter. I hope your sauerkraut is coming along well. xx

  4. Despite the mud you still managed some beautiful photos. Love the one of the gate with the shadow reflection . B

  5. It would sppear that your camera is still working perfectly. Or were the photos pre-mud.

  6. Yes, but did you do the nonchalant uprighting of yourself, while CLEARLY NOT looking around to see if anyone saw? as if to say, "I meant to do that". and i'm only chuckling because it wasn't me. but it totally could've been.

i'm very fond of any excuse to hunker down and attack stacks of books. as much as i'm looking forward to spring and the garden, i'm going to miss the burrowing-in of winter.

and yes, pressing on regardless. it's all that's left to me at this point. xoxo

  7. I fall down a lot. It's only because I live in the desert that it isn't usually me in the mud. :) Hunkering sounds perfect. I hope you don't lose that tenner...around here, it's been card tricks lately. They borrowed an ancient video from the library (all the women have Rachel "Friends" haircuts) and they're trying to teach themselves from it. Mostly they argue and throw cards at each other. It's going really well. :)

  8. I love your tenacity. I can't imagine what your bathtub looked like after your spill! Seriously, I'm happy you weren't injured.

I am going stir crazy as well as winter envelops us. Gray days have me reading and drinking lots of warm beverages, a glass or two of wine in the evening. :)

    Take good care,

    Jane

  9. Hope you had no bruising from falling (mud is generally softer to land in – I have form!). Your photos are gorgeous, so worth the exploring. Enjoy your hunkering (such a good word) and good luck with the magic tricks (hide your purse!). Sam x

  11. What is wrong with you? Nothing. You have a sense of adventure! Being prim and proper all the time isn't all that fun. ;)

  12. Congratulations, as perfect a 1 point landing as could ever be!!!
As for me, with 6 more wks of winter looming, anything is possible.
    2, 3, 4 & 5 point landings - facing the other way - are more my specialty!!!

  16. Oh dear. What adventures everyday life brings. I wonder how you got home safely form you muddy slide? If you held your head up high pretending no mud patches were attached on your bottom. I can't help but giggle a bit. It could have been me, that's for sure. And for the "HUGE Scooter Drop Off Highway Bridge!" video... Stay cool, have a coffee. Unless you have highway bridges close by of course. ;)

  17. Sorry to hear about your tumble. I bet you were pushed (I always am). Rice pudding has been on the menu here, too. For breakfast.

  20. Oh CJ! So unfair for you, not fun at all. I hope that you are alright and that all the mud has been banished!

Hope you did not hurt yourself too much!

  22. I long for dry days too... sick of mud on carpets and on the dog and in the car... need I say more? At least it's mainly hockey that's played this term so my washing machine is having a bit of a rest.

  23. I love Stratford Park! I knew it from the first photo, although we haven't been there since the kids of the family were little. Are there still hundreds of cheeky squirrels there? You must go again in the Summer when the little train runs, and they used to sometimes have a brass band on a Sunday in the little Band Stand.

  24. A walk is not a walk without mud or a fall involved - or certainly, none of my walks anyway! Hope you warmed up sufficiently afterwards? Hunkering down well with plenty of knitting projects to keep me going until the ground becomes unfrozen enough to start digging again. Regards.

  26. CJ as always you make me smile. I'd like to take a walk in the woods with you, although can we keep to the paths please? I very much like the idea of rice pudding with double cream. X
