Three things, or four?

We had a little holiday treat in a canoe yesterday.  We did surprisingly well at zipping along, although there were a few moments where the person at the back (that would be me) was dragged through a tree or into brambles.  I ended up with yellow pollen streaks down my face from catkins.  Otherwise fairly unscathed, all things considered.  There was a duck with nine little ducklings.  A male mallard was chasing the mother duck all over the place, really aggressively.  You can see him in the picture.  The little ducks were desperately zooming after her.  He left them alone in the end.  Maybe they were in his patch.

I've been sowing a few things in the garden.  It almost feels like summer after all.  We've pulled the last of the leeks and planted the first of the lettuces.  The weeds are up and the windowsills are full to bursting.  It's the time of year when the garden and the allotment can start to feel overwhelming.  I have to remind myself to calm down and tackle it a bit at a time.  Lots of deep breathing.

I fell down the stairs this morning.  No sympathy necessary, I'm used to it, you'll recall how clumsy I am.  Later on I had an incident with some pizza dough.  I think I must had misread the recipe.  It was huge and really really sticky.  It was stuck to absolutely everything, I couldn't do anything with it.  I'd have taken a photo for you but I couldn't get it off my hands.  Then I knocked an oil bottle off of the counter and somehow the drizzly bit at the top broke a bit and got pushed all the way down into the oil bottle.  These things come in threes, so I was hoping that the pizza dough disaster counted as a thing, so that was my three.  But then when I was washing up after tea I dropped my flan dish and it broke into two.  So that is definitely three things.  Unless of course the pizza dough does count, in which case the flan dish will be the start of the next three things.  I'm moving cautiously.  And I'm thinking about starting a tag for posts about clumsiness and disasters.  Wishing you all a lovely weekend, full of sunshine and good things.

  1. Oh dear poor you! But you seem to be able to laugh these catastrophes off which is good. Hope you won't be bruised tomorrow.

  2. Sounds exactly like me. I was making beanbag pouches filled with lentils with my two girls las week. Can you guess which one of us knocked the jar of lentils all over the floor ? Lentil and dust soup anyone ?

  3. I think I'd go to bed after that so my stuff would be safe from me. :) I have moments like this all the time. I've never actually knocked over a bottle of oil but I have visceral images of doing so every time I use it. I love seeing your plants coming up! It's looking great already at the allotment. I hope you have a good weekend.

  4. First off, your photos are lovely..second, I think that mallard male duck has way, way too much testosterone, (my god, i actually spelled that word correctly), third, your courage is amazing, fourth, I came close to doing a header in the shower this morning..saved only by the shower door..and fifth, my punctuation stinks.
Have a lovely and safe weekend.

  6. Your are very organised with your garden. I need to try again with mine after my summer garden disaster. I've since realised its too hot in queensland to plant things in summer. Sorry about your fall and the flan dish. Hope thats the end of your three things now. The canoeing looks fun. Glad there were no disasters there! Have a lovely accident-free weekend :)

  7. Mercy! Please know you are not alone in clumsiness, but I do hope that you are exempt from more current episodes. I forgot to use my cane today going in and out of the gym to swim and was super aware of the treachery of my flat feet and creaky knees, but managed not to fall as I did seven months ago when I broke my glasses and chipped a front tooth. Thanks so much for sharing the photos. Our Mr. and Mrs. Mallard are still tending their nest of eggs. My son got a photo of a wood duck on our back pond today and he has been slaving over our front garden lately planting some hydrangea bushes and various flowers. Wishing you and yours a safe and happy weekend! :) xx

  8. I can't believe how well your seedlings are doing - I've only just sowed mine. Not to self: must get more organized next year! I don't envy you clearing up that oil! Fingers crossed that that was the 3. Have a safe weekend. xx

  9. Ooh, your lettuces look lovely. I have only just sown some. And your squash plants. Mine haven't germinated yet.
The canoeing looks fun, I've been out in one a long time ago, really enjoyed it though, close to the water and wildlife.
Oh dear, hope you haven't sustained too many bruises! I've been quite clumsy recently, like Thursday I knocked over my glass of water on the desk at work (but fortunately had just finished drinking it!)

  14. My dear, wasn't it you with the jam incident too? My sympathies, I'm clumsy too, we are looking at new flooring for the kitchen & while I would like slate tiles I don't think my hands mixed with my collection of Emma Bridgewater china would do! I did giggle at you getting caught up in branches while canoeing! xx

  16. Good idea to start a disasters tag.. then in all probability you'll have nothing to put in it :)

  17. That canoe outing looks, and sounds, like fun. Relax and enjoy your gardening.
Please give up falling downstairs! Thanks, and you too. Flighty xx

  18. You did have a fraught day but looking in the bright side at least the three things were not canoe connected. Garden wise things really feel as though they are on the move now.

  19. The canoeing looks like fun, I haven't done that for many years, I would love to go white-water rafting but I think it would be a little extreme for me. Great photos as usual, your seedlings look so healthy.
I am accident prone too, I have fallen down my stairs more than once. My last accident in February put me in hospital as I tripped carrying bags of shopping inside and broke my fall with my mouth on the edge of my outdoor table. I managed to lacerate my top lip and split it in half as my teeth went through the flesh and knocked out a tooth. I spent the night in the emergency room where my lip had to be stitched back together. Ouch!! So be careful, you are more than likely like me, rushing around trying to do too many things at once, always in a rush.
    Take care dear C.J.

  20. You do make me laugh :o). I hope you were OK after the stairs tumble in particular, and the other incidents in general. Your canoeing trip reminds me of our annual punting in Oxford- someone always ends up tangled in bushes and often one or two in the river as well, for good measure xx

  21. Oh my...maybe you should put on a protective helmet for the weekend until you know whether or not you are on the start of a new round of "threes." At least one of the first bunch didn't involve tipping over the canoe. :-)

  22. I hope your three things are done now, I think you've had enough calamities for the time being. I never got round to planting out my leeks last year and I've been regretting it all winter, I shan't make the same mistake this year.

  23. Your canoe outing sounds like great fun, I'd love to do something like that with the kids. I hope your having a lovely and accident free weekend! xx

  24. Oh dear, stay away from anything sharp or breakable for a few days! Lovely photos, I know what you mean about the feeling a little overwhelmed with all things growing. I need to get things planted before its too late but have sprained my knee so not the easiest thing to do at the moment.

  25. Your post began so spring like and I felt such joy and then all the mishaps began and it felt like I was reading about myself. Hope you didn't hurt yourself too much falling down the stairs. Sending non clumsy positive vibes your way

  27. I do hope the flan dish was not the start of the next three disasters! Have a wonderful accident free weekend (what's left of it, I am late to comment as I often am).

  28. The tomato plants and squashes are looking good. I'd better get our Crown Prince out of their seed packet!

  29. Mr McGregor would be proud of those lettuces! The canoeing sounds fun and at least you had no calamities involving water. Sorry to hear about your flan dish, what a shame. Here's a link to the no fail pizza dough recipe I always use:

  30. Oh dear, not good, hopefully that's your share for a while. Veggies are looking great, mine are a bit more behind, definatly got to stay in the greenhouse now the cold weather is back!

  31. Branches in your face certainly count for at least two things. I am like that. I was at work the other day and went to sit on a big therapy ball with a child in my hands and almost fell off the back of it. Now mind you it was in front of this child's parents, do you think they trust me now?
    Hugs,

  32. Hey CJ,
I also have an affinity with clumsy. All my mugs are £1 from Wilkinsons because eventually I will break them all.
My boys love kayaking in St Ives Bay. I stand on the pier fretting.

  33. Lovely photos, CJ - you have been very busy in the garden! I know what you mean about this time of year. I find that I seem to be on top of everything until about the middle of May and then it gets ahead of me. My kids have enjoyed canoeing and kayaking at scouts and explorers, but your photo reminded me of my husband taking me punting on the Cam and the odd brush with a willow tree :)

  34. At least the canoe trip was accident free apart from the pollen! I am just as clumsy as you so you are in good company and I have done the same with the oil bottle! Sarah x

  36. Oh boy! You really had a string of things didn't you? For some reason (you) it all seems absolutely OK and charming. You're tough stuff lady. I confess to buying someone else's pizza dough.

Favorite photos, just like favorite foods, Leeks and Lettuce, all that beautiful green. I love the green of the lettuce against the dark soil, the angle and contrast. very nice :)
