All is safely gathered in

Technical problems here, so just a short post.

I've been collecting up my apples and pears from the five trees in the garden.  They're only young trees, and so the harvest has been small.  But they are delicious, particularly the apples.

I've got Cox's Orange Pippins - just a very small tree in a pot, Egremont Russets and Ribston Pippins, which taste superb.  Apples don't last long in this house though, so before long I'll be buying them from the supermarket again.  Our local greengrocer closed last week, which is a shame.  It would be nice if another one opened, but I don't hold out much hope.

We've had a week of birthday celebrations here as the biggest boy turned 10 on Thursday.  A whole decade!  There's been bowling and pizza, new books and a new memory card for his camera, and yesterday a much-anticipated visit to Cotswold Falconry Centre.  I have photos, but Photoshop has been wiped off of my laptop, and as I can't locate the disc, at the moment I can't transfer pictures onto the computer.  I had a bit of a technological meltdown mid-week.  It is so utterly frustrating when for no apparent reason it all goes wrong.  But no doubt it will all be sorted in the end, somehow.  In the meantime I might just have to rely on picture-free posts.  Yikes.  Hope a good week is had by all.  I shall be trotting up and down on school runs, doing all the normal weekly things and almost certainly grumbling about technology.  But I do love it really.

    1. You are so right. And somehow I have become so reliant on something I don't understand at all!

  2. What a lovely harvest, ours has been very poor this year although I think it's mostly due to the incompetent gardener! (me)
Hope you get the laptop sorted and don't stress too much about your allotment - I've just been reading back as I'd missed a few posts.
    Take care.

    1. I'm feeling calmer about the allotment now that autumn is here and the weeds are growing much more slowly!

  3. Do you thin your apples?

As for downloading didn't your camera come with a disk to allow downloading or alternatively have you tried just plugging in your camera and seeing whether your computer will search for a suitable driver.
Also try going o MyComputer and seeing if the camera opens as a separate storage device - if so you can open it and browse for your pictures and just copy and paste them to MyPicture folder. (Hope that isn't gobbledigook)

    1. The boys are very kind and thin the apples for me. They do it the old-fashioned way, by playing football very hard on the adjoining grass. And last year the littlest boy personally went round and pulled every tiny apple off by hand. Between them they really do go the extra mile. So I don't actually EVER pull off an apple myself, as it's a bit of a miracle when one reaches maturity. Thanks for the techie advice, I did manage to do that, and now I have a new post!

  4. You may have a small crop of fruit but it does look delicious. We're living on fresh apples here, too. Sorry to hear about the technology problems, it is a frustration we all understand!

    1. They were good apples, but long gone now, so it's back to the supermarket unfortunately. I didn't enjoy the pears at all, so I'm thinking of replacing the pear tree with an apple tree, although it is quite a lovely thing.

  6. I'm sorry to hear about your meltdown, that sounds very frustrating and I hope it's back to normal to soon. The apples look so fresh and delicious, I just love freshly-picked apples in the fall. They're very hard to find where I live now but I grew up in New York and they were one of my favorite things about fall there. Happy belated birthday to your big guy!

  7. The apples and pears look wonderful, how lovely to have home grown. We have a great little greengrocer near by, it's so good to have some independent shops still going, but it gets harder for them all the time so it's no wonder that so many have had to shut down. Happy belated birthday to your son, doesn't time just fly by?

    1. Lucky you, having a local greengrocer. I do so prefer them to supermarkets. And yes, time does indeed fly, it's ridiculous!

  8. I eat an apple most days so would enjoy those, and the pears look good as well. Shame about the local greengrocer.
A visit to the Falconry Centre is the sort of thing I like, I hope that you enjoyed yourselves there.
I empathise with your tech problems. Flighty xx

    1. Thanks Flighty. The pears were rather dry and pulpy and not very nice at all. I'm wondering if I should have picked them a lot earlier.

  9. Your apple and pear harvest looks so good, the fruit seems to me to always taste better from the garden even though they might have more defects! Sorry to hear about your technical problems hope they get sorted.

    1. You're right about the flavour. The boys are a bit put off by the various holes etc. though at the moment. They are too used to bland supermarket visual perfection I'm afraid. I'm hoping that one day they will have an epiphany though!

  10. Computer problems make me more frustrated than almost anything else around. I feel your pain and I hope things will be sorted out soon. Maybe you just need more RAM? I actually have no idea what the problem could be, but that helped my computer out. The apples look delicious, though. There's so many different kinds!

    1. I have been wiped and reloaded! Unfortunately Photoshop wasn't reloaded though, and I've lost the disc. Sigh. I do love all the different apple varieties, it would be so useful to be able to try some of them before investing in a tree.

    1. I was really hopeful, but unfortunately they weren't nice at all. I can't understand why - I think I'll try picking them a lot earlier next year. I thought they would be sweeter the longer they were left, but now I'm wondering if this was maybe not the thing to do.

  12. Sorry to hear about your technological problems, how frustrating. Sometimes blogger gets me shouting at the computer in pure frustration. Tech stuff was never my strong suit.

What a wonderful harvest from relatively small trees - it's heartening to know they produce fruit so soon. My apple tree only produces cookers, which are still very useful. Happy birthday to your boy, I hope he had a wonderful day. x

    1. Thanks Gillian. Tech things are a real weakness for me. I have lots of ideas for things for the blog, but no idea how to implement them. So rather than fiddle around I leave well alone. Thanks for the birthday wishes, he did indeed have a good day.

  13. Technological breakdowns make me cry!! So I hope you got yours sorted out and you have your Photoshop back up and working. Happy Birthday to your young man! Woohoo!! Double digits! So what are you going to do with that gorgeous fruit? I see pie's in your future?... Yum!
    Much love to you,
    Tammy

    1. Thank you Tammy. No photoshop yet, but I live in hope. You are right about pies. Also some crumbles - so easy to make - and I've got a lovely recipe for an apple cake that's got little chunks of dark chocolate in it.

  14. Hope the technology sorts itself out soon ! We don't have a greengrocer locally either, which is really rather annoying. I'd love to be able to buy produce from a greengrocer, meat from a butcher.... But all we have locally is a couple of supermarkets and two bakeries, and well, I'd rather bake my own bready stuff.

    1. I like to bake my own bread as well, although I do use a bread machine. Especially as our local baker charges almost £2 for a very ordinary loaf!

  16. Hey CJ,

Just thought I'd check in to thank you for your thoughts. I m feeling much better, partly down to change in medication. I've been busy doing the same old, but I think my blog break has been a good idea. I'm not sure any readers would want a daily update on my mental health!! It is part of who I am, but I don't like it when it starts to overflow everywhere.
I hope that you are well and your three boys are keeping you on your toes - I know mine certainly are! Take care of yourself,
    With love
    Leanne xx
